1930s Overview

This section primarily links to documents from the 1930s that were written outside periods when Laura Philinda Campbell and William Laurence Krieg wrote significant groups of letters.

The first letter we have from Philinda is undated, apparently written while she was in elementary school in the 1920s. During much of this period we know she attended Miss Beard School, Morristown, New Jersey, while living fairly nearby. (The school's name is pronounced like bear with a -d.) We have no record of her exact address or which years she attended that particular school. The next letter on file for her was written 1938-10-14 by José Ángel Vega P. to Philinda. This date puts it during Philinda's junior year at Swarthmore College. Following that academic year she elected to spend the summer in Paris; the first letter on file from Paris is dated 1939-07-14 and begins, "Life goes on as usual," so apparently it was not her first. Increasing hostilities between Germany and France subsequently prevented her return, resulting in a two-year sojourn in France.
A somewhat more detailed account of her early life is included with Campbell Family Photos 1930-1948.

William, on the other hand, wrote quite a few letters throughout the 1930s and saved them along with memorabilia. As a result the timeline of his activities is much clearer than Philinda's. His correspondence falls into three main groups: his four years at Dartmouth College, two years of graduate work at Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy , and a year as consul-intern in Stuttgart, Germany.

The table below shows these major periods and links to the associated document groups.
